Estimation Models allow Data Analytics teams to estimate metrics for which actual data is not available. For example the use of a fuel burn model since it may be difficult to collect actual fuel burn. They are also used for estimating performance in the future with different demand, airport infrastructure or technology. This type of data analytics may make use of simulation models or statistical analysis that interpolate or extrapolate from a limited set of actual data and project performance for a broader time period.
Operational trials may be used to validate the estimation models. Data analytics may then apply simple scaling or a more detailed algorithm to apply the results of the operational trial to full scale operations. Other projects may use a simulation model to test performance using different traffic levels or fleet equipage scenarios.
